About Wayne Owen's 1929 Ford Model A

Our family has always loved old cars, my dad was a mechanic and had a variety of cars through the years. My wife Sue had been around old cars, as her dad had several throughout his life. We also went to many car shows with the family, so it was no surprise that our son Harry decided to jump into a rebuild project.

Harry and I heard about a body, frame and parts for a 1929 Ford that was in Sussex County. We bought it for a few hundred dollars, brought it home and stacked it next to the garage making it look almost like a car. I told my son: “if we start this we have to finish it”. We started slowly and used whatever parts we could find. Harry was working nights and did a lot of the work on the car during the day. I helped out evenings and weekends.

My brother gave us a 9″ ford rear from a Lincoln Versailles and a transmission. Then our neighbor donated a steering box and a column that came out of a 1965 Mustang. When it came to the exhaust system, I remembered the old stainless steel pool ladder that was still laying around, and since Harry had some experience welding, we made it work. Harry made titanium headlight brackets and also the front bar. We found a second row fold down seat in a junk yard that came out of a Mitsubishi Montero. My wife looked at it and said that she could make a new seat cover for it once we decided the color we wanted. We went with red and white. She took the old cover apart and bought some medium weight vinyl and made a nice seat cover that fit well!

When it came time to do the headliner, Sue said: “let me give it a try”, and she did a nice job on that as well, so she went a head an did the door panels. Harry finished off the interior with the left over red vinyl. So it was a family project.

Harry and I did all the work ourselves and it took about 2 years to finish, from 1996 to 1998, all done on a shoestring budget. Later, Harry moved on to other projects and I kept the car!
